New guide from the Texas modular sofa brand explains typical couch lifespans, the most common failure points, and how to compare 10-year ownership costs

AUSTIN, TX, UNITED STATES, October 13, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Mirewood, a direct-to-consumer modular sofa brand, today announced the publication of a new consumer guide, "How Long Do Couches Last? The Real Cost of Owning a Couch for 10 Years." The guide is available on the company's website and is intended to help shoppers evaluate sofa durability and total cost of ownership ahead of the holiday hosting season.

According to the guide, most couches last between 7 and 15 years. Budget sofas built on engineered-wood or particleboard frames are commonly replaced within 2 to 4 years, often because the frame loosens or sags while the fabric still appears acceptable. Sofas built on kiln-dried wood frames with high-density foam cushions and replaceable covers can last 10 to 15 years or more.

The guide identifies three components that determine a sofa's lifespan: the frame, the cushions, and the covers. It lists common signs that a couch should be replaced, including a frame that creaks or sags, cushions that no longer recover their shape, and fabric that can no longer be cleaned.

"The frame decides how long the couch lasts. The cushions and fabric decide how long it looks good," said Yazen Halik, founder of Mirewood. "We published this guide so shoppers can tell the difference between a sofa that needs new covers and a sofa that needs replacing."

The guide also includes a 10-year cost comparison. By its estimates, a $600 budget sofa replaced every three years, plus professional cleaning and haul-away fees, costs roughly $2,400 to $3,000 over a decade, while one durable sofa with washable covers that lasts the full ten years costs roughly $1,600 to $2,000 in the same period.
